One of the Poland’s leading and multi-awarded chamber music ensembles, performing all around the globe. The quartet performs the canon of great chamber music masterpieces but also dedicates special attention to the music of our time.
In the years 1993–2017 the ensemble was the organizer of the International Festival of Chamber Music, Silesian Quartet and its Guests. 25 editions of the festival gathered dozens of outstanding artists from Poland and abroad. Since 2014, the quartet regularly appears in NOSPR in Katowice, running its own chamber music series.
The extensive quartet’s discography contains over fifty CDs released by such labels as Chandos, ECM, EMI Music Poland, Olympia, Naxos, CD Accord. For the recording of Grażyna Bacewicz's string quartets (Chandos), it was awarded the prestigious Gramophone Classical Music Award for the best chamber music album of the year. Silesian Quartet is a laureate of eight Fryderyk awards, received for albums with the music of Karol Szymanowski, Witold Lutosławski, Grażyna Bacewicz, Ernest Chausson and Mieczysław Wajnberg.
In 2019, the ensemble was honoured with the Gold Medal for Merit to Culture Gloria Artis, and also joined the winners of the Koryfeusz of the Polish Music Award.
For several years, the ensemble has been involved in the recording of a complete set of Mieczysław Weinberg's string quartets for the CD Accord label. The premiere of the seven-CD release is scheduled for the last quarter of 2022.
